How Does ABA Therapy Work?
ABA therapy uses the science and understanding of behaviors to increase beneficial behaviors while reducing unfavorable behaviors.
- The client's strengths and weaknesses are assessed through direct observation and parent consultation.
- An individualized program is made to help the client gain more skills.
- Complex skills are broken down into doable steps that are taught separately.
- These steps are then chained together to successfully achieve the complex skill.
- The client's newly acquired skills are applied to other situations and environments.
- The client achieves generalized mastery across multiple scenarios and locations.
- The client transitions to the next most appropriate learning environment.
How to Start ABA Therapy Services
1. Diagnosis
Obtain an Autism diagnosis from your primary care provider or a specialist.
2. Pre-authorization
Contact Colorful Horizons through our website, email, or by phone. We will take your insurance information, determine if you qualify for an evaluation, and establish if there are any out-of-pocket costs.
3. Authorization
Colorful Horizons will contact your insurance company to request authorization for an initial ABA evaluation. Approval usually takes 5-7 business days.
4. Evaluation
Once your authorization is approved, Colorful Horizons will contact you to set up an evaluation with a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). Evaluations usually take between 1-2 hours.
5. Therapy Authorization
The BCBA will build a treatment plan based on the initial evaluation results. The treatment plan is then sent to the client's insurance provider to get therapy hours approved. The BCBA will also go over the treatment plan with the client's parents and/or caregivers. This process usually takes 5-7 business days.
6. First ABA Therapy Session
After insurance approval, the client will be ready to schedule their first ABA therapy session and begin working toward all of their treatment plan goals.
